Activity budgets: where does $ go?
by Jerome
Business Editor Throughout ones high school career, a student tries to find his or her identity. The student may find it through the many activity options that are provided here at Technical high school. Although there are many to choose from these activities are not free, in fact they can be quite expensive for those that participate in many events at once. Now where does all this money that you are spending go to? That depends largely on the activity that you chose to participate. Most, if not all of the money goes into the yearly budget of the program, which is added to a school paid budget. That is then back by numerous fund raising opportunities to feed the roughly $600,000 expense every year. Sports: Football is one of the more popular sports at Tech high, drawing in about 150 to 200 students each year. Which means more of every thing, |
Coaches, Equipment, and transportation, and it shows in the cost to pay it all. According to the 2010- 10 the cost to pay the Coaching staff was $36,396, plus the amount to pay the officials which was 4,755 for a grand total of 41,151 for staff alone that is a lot of skin for Tech to shed. Then there is transportation that costs $4,731, considering that they do not travel often. This sport is one of the more expensive with the exceptions of gymnastics, but contains numerous fund raising opportunities. Track, our second highest sport in participation, does not differ much from the all powerful sport of foot ball, although its numbers are half of what is in football. The team is pretty big even if they are not in the hundreds, with 67 players and $208 per head. The team only has four paid coaches and their salary is probably not what many would believe, earning $17,684.beside that track has been known to provide fun through the various categories that competitors can be in. in a recent interview with an up and coming track star Grace Akubue, Akubue said “my experience in track had been amazing so far, and the team members as |
well as the coaches have high standards that push me to do my best”
Arts: Second in the category of most participants, is not a sport, but can contain movement, is speech. This activity allow student to release there inner orator at meets in the double A league, the number of people that have join this activity reached 84 people and cost around $240 per speaker. The team has four official coaches that are paid $15,000 yearly. The speech team has been very successful; competing with city schools instead of the schools in the district. They have also been CLC champions for the past 18 years. These activities are just samples of the many offered at Tech and the prices may startle a parent at first knowing where it all goes can help any person decide what to take part in. |
Economic Report
by Mitch
Business Staff Writer The economic report was taken every day over the month of February and shows the conditions of the month in a set of index numbers. The higher the index numbers, the better the economy of Minnesota is doing. So from the month of January to February, the economic growth was up in all sectors. There are things that the report covers, and the subjects are Overall (which is the |
overall score of the economy), New orders (commodities and services that are meant to be produced in MN), Delivery Lead Time (the time that the products take to get to the stores/households), Inventories ( the price of all the goods that are in stock), and Employment (the amount of hours vs productivity that an individual works). Price and Confidence is also listed but is only for the whole US for it only relates towards the rate of growth/decline of the national economy. Minnesota: The February Minnesota Business Conditions Index was above growth neutral for the 30th straight month. The index expanded to 58.3 from January’s 57.5. Components of the index for February

were new orders at 63.8, production or sales at 65.7, delivery lead time at 54.0, inventories at 53.8, and employment at 53.9. “Since the beginning of the recession, Minnesota has lost more than 42,000, or 9.4 percent of its manufacturing jobs. Our surveys over the past several months indicate that manufacturers in the state will increase hiring in the months ahead. While the pace of new hiring will be healthy, it will be limited somewhat by increases in productivity,” said Goss.

Campus Chipotle vs. off-campus Chipotle
by Allie Hemish
Business Staff Writer A new Chipotle was built on the Saint Cloud State University campus. In hopes of getting better business with all of the local college students. It’s only been two months since its grand opening, and they’re bringing in more people than the older Chipotle in down-town St. Cloud. Mark Johnson, manager of the Chipotle on 2nd street stated, |
His idea of Chipotle was to offer a simple menu that offered
“We never thought that we would bring in this much income on the first few months of business, but it looks like where we decided to put the new Chipotle was a good idea. It was either on Saint Cloud State University campus or in Sartell by Walmart.” Johnson said that they doubled the amount of income that Chipotle down-town made in their first few months of business. Employees receive a check that averages out to about eight dollars and fifty cents. To get the whole place up and running it cost close to 90,000 dollars. Chipotle started in 1993 in Denver Colorado by a man named Steve Ells. |
people fresh prepared food each day using the same cooking techniques as gourmet restaurants. “The critics raved and customers began lining up at my tiny burrito joint. Facebook Stocks Sold by May of 2012
Trevor Schmiesing
Business Staff Writer Today Facebook announced that they would stop selling shares to private companies sometime this week. This happened because facebook is preparing for their Initial Public Stock Offering (IPO), that could come as early as May this year. Which means; that people would be able to buy and own a small portion of the company. Mark Zuckerberg still has the largest amount of |
the company under his control so he gets to make most of the major decisions. The company is worth an estimated $101 Billion. Which makes Mark Zuckerberg worth roughly $24 Billion. The price of a share in facebook is unknown until the day before the IPO; when bankers sit down with facebook and set a price for the stock. But the price per stock is estimated to be about $40 each. Many investors are excited for the IPO in May because of its $100 Billion plus value and plenty of media attention. With the sale of stocks, companies can get anyones information on facebook and target you with specific ads you may be more likely to pay attention to. |
That’s not so different from what Google does; Google creates a profile on you and puts user-specific ads on your computer. With facebook profiles added into the information that the internet has. Ads might just become more specific for a particular person. Privacy has been an issue for facebook a few times in the past; getting attacked and sued by users who feel that their information is to public for anybody to see. If people don’t want people to see a profile, then get off facebook. Otherwise you gave facebook permission to do what they want with your information by accepting their terms that most people don’t bother reading. |
