CENTRAL LAKES MUSIC FESTIVAL
by, Katie Madland
Variety Editor It was a vivacious Monday evening for the students in the St. Cloud Tech High School Honors Orchestra. The students from Tech were awaiting the arrival of other honors members to join them. The other students, ageing from 13-18, came from Brainerd, Alexandria, Apollo, and Willmar to join them for a four-hour practice after school. With the help from Dr. Arnott, the Honors Orchestra would be ready for their concert. The Honors Choir and Band met that evening too. Dr. Charlotte Moe instructed the choir, and Dr. Timothy Diem directed the band. On a fine Friday morning at seven am, the Honors Band, Choir, and Orchestra Tech bus left for the Central Lakes Conference Music Festival in Willmar. Later in the morning, around nine- thirty, the other students left and joined the honors members. In total, seven schools |
from several cities around the central Minnesota area were attending this festival. These schools were Alexandria, Apollo, Brainerd, Rocori, Sauk Rapids-Rice, Tech, and Willmar. As the festival went on that Friday, students heard other schools perform.
Some of the songs ranged from Mozart classics to the newer age composers. Either way it was an interesting experience for the students. Mrs. Mather, the conductor for the St. Cloud Tech orchestra, shares her opinion about the festival, “It was a wonderful opportunity for students to not only perform, but to hear other schools. The honors orchestra, band and choir did a fantastic job!” While the other schools played for each other, they were also performing for a clinician. After they finished their songs they were critiqued. Depending on their music department they were critiqued by a different person. Katie Madland, a member of the Tech High School orchestra, shares her opinion on the critique, “I can understand where Dr. Arnott was coming from when he said we needed to work on playing together, but I also know as a player from the orchestra; it was hard to play together in a gym. The acoustics were terrible!” |
When seven o’clock rolled around that evening, the Honors Band kicked off the concert with a beautiful piece called Valdres, composed by
Hanssen/Bainum. When the band was finished, it was soon time for the percussion section to shine with a fabulous composition called Glizville, by Chris Crockarell. Soon to follow was the Honors Chior. They started with an upbeat song called, African Processional, written by Carah Reed and D. V. Montoya. The choir concluded their performance with No Rocks A-Cryin’ by Rollo Dilworth. It was now the orchestras turn to take the gym floor. They opened with a quick tempo song called Suite in F (Lady Radnor’s Suite) composed by C. Hubert Parry. The orchestra ended the concert with a fast and challenging piece called A-Roving from Suite for Strings, by John Rutter. |
Who lives in a pine-apple under the sea?
By Jennifer Clayton
Variety Staff Writer The character-driven toon chronicles the natural and sometimes nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurably optimistic and earnest sea sponge, and his undersea friends. Dwelling a few fathoms beneath the tropical isle of Bikini atoll in the sub-surface city of Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob lives in a two-story pineapple. Instead of taking the logical |
approach to everyday challenges, SpongeBob approaches life in a wayward and unconventional way. Weather searching for the ultimate spatula to perfect his burger flipping technique at the krusty krab, or just hanging out with his best friend Patrick (an amiable starfish), SpongeBob’s hoof intentions and overzealous approach to life usually creates chaos in his underwater world.
In a recent survey with a former creative writing teacher, she stated that SpongeBob squarepants was “Cute” (vorpahl). Do you think the show is appropriate for children? Vorpahl stated, “so/so – overall yes! They would not understand his humor” Vorpahl used to watch the |
show, but not anymore because she no longer has cable. She also doesn’t think that the show advertizes things that children should not know but there is some inappropriate humor. Vorpahl’s favorite character is SpongeBob. Everyone loves SpongeBob! It will always be an amazing show but survey says that the inappropriate behavior should be limited so children don’t get the wrong idea. Patrick star is the number one bad influence by being the best at doing nothing witch is teaching kids to be lazy. The show is encouraged to be watched by everyone in the community. Survey says SpongeBob squarepants is not rejected.

eSports: a strong community
by Chris Berg
Variety Staff Writer From arcade to console, 8bit to 3d. The rapid pace of the technology has spawned a new breed of sports. Electronic sports started by the players who had the will to be the best. A man named Starks stated, “I find that the similarities between sports and eSports, as they’re called, are simply the physical nature one has that the other doesn’t. Teamwork, communication, practice, hand eye co-ordination, consistency, awareness, reflexes and probably the most important of all being a knowledge and understanding of the game you’re playing.” Such a statement may have people question how two things of opposite |
nature could be , compared. However eSports has a huge fan base, international leagues, and professionals. In 2002, Major League Gaming (MLG) was founded by Sundance DiGiovanni and Mike Sepso. It became the North American professional electronic sports organization. Though in the beginning it was only a few thousand supporters and fans; now the league has grown national. The local area network (LAN) events they host usually consist of four or five different game divisions. The games normally are Halo, Starcraft 2, and some fighters. Last year Sundance had to drop Call of Duty from the circuit due to non LAN support that Modern Warfare 3 offered. With the loss of last year’s popular division people thought that it would hurt MLG’s fan base. However Alex “GoldenboyFTW” Mendex stated, “CoD not getting picked up did not harm the popularity of MLG by any means.” Will “BigTymer” Johnson, one of the best CoD players, also had some things to say
|
about Call of Duty (CoD) not being picked up; he said, “While I’m disappointed in Infinity Ward (Developers of CoD: Modern Warfare 3) for once again not implementing such a seemingly simple viable LAN system after years of acknowledgment, this is a good opportunity for the competitive CoD community to prove that it can stand alone, instead of solely relying on MLG to fund its future.”
“This is not the time for everyone to just give up and quit and move on, now is the time the time to push harder than ever.” Last year, Will was a part of Team Optic during black ops MLG events and also The CoD Million Dollar Tournament. Will’s team took first at million dollar tournament, each player on the team earned a hundred thousand dollars. Electronic sports as a community started small but then grew to a huge family of players. Each player different from the other, but the differences only brought them together. No language or race can change how well someone plays the game. |

by Josh Honer
Staff Variety Writer Laugh all you want, life never stops being like high school. Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) star in the movie. When They were in high school Jenko was the jock that was all muscle and no brains. Schmidt was the exact opposite. He was an outcast with no friends. The film opens five years in the past. We also see Jenko in the principle office. The principle is explaining to him that, because of his grades, Jenko will not be allowed to attend the prom this year. Jenko is devastated by this |
news and this brings us to the present date.
The unlikely pair joins forces when they meet at the police academy. Schmidt is the brains and Jenko is the brawn. With tutoring and some physical training they make their way through the academy. Some action starts when the two see a group of bikers smoking marijuana in the park. They approach the gang and end up finding some “Serious” drugs in the saddle bag of one of the bikes. The chase is on as Jenko heads after one perp and Schmidt takes his pedal bike after another. The two are extremely excited about their first arrest, but due to them not reading their arrestee his rights their captain is forced to release the criminal. Jenko and Schmidt are assigned to a project called “21 Jump Street”. This |
project is for special officers that look young and can blend in with high school/college students.
The two men are sent to a local high school where a new drug synthetic drug is becoming popular. They make friends with the students who can get the drug and try to find the supplier. With the changing in the times Jenko and Schmidt have seemed to have switched popularities. Jenko is somewhat jealous of his now popular friend. Their cover is broken while the big deal is going down. A shoot out goes down between the biker gang from the beginning of the movie.
