Ricky Rubio is the next uprising star
by Austin Kreutner
Sports Editor Everyone has been anticipating the arrival of the famous Ricky Rubio. People have been patiently waiting for him to come and take over the point guard position for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Ricky could possibly lead them to the playoffs where the Timberwolves have only been to a total of eight times, and last participated in a western conference quarter final in 2004. Kevin Garnett was still a part of the organization. Rubio was given the opportunity to play basketball in the United States when Minnesota drafted him in 2009, but he had chosen to stay in Spain and play there for two more years, then during the NBA lockout this year Ricky had decided he would bring his talents to the states, and try to become one of the top point guards in the league. An interview with the owner of the franchise was setup and asked him a few important questions of why they had drafted such a young player from Spain. “We decided to pick up such a superior athlete from another country because he was showing that he could compete with some of the best athletes from all around the world, also that he was showing everyone he was the real deal and |
was ready to prove that he can be a superior athlete in the United States.”
After the interview took place Ricky happened to run into one of my reporters. They asked him what it’s like playing in the United States, and he said. “I love playing point guard in the United States; I’ve had a lot of fun times in Spain, but most that I’ve had playing the game of basketball in Minnesota. The thing is I don’t like when everyone is chanting my name at games, it’s a team sport and everyone should be getting the same amount of credit that I am receiving. I would just like to thank everyone for their support.” Ricky has been a well like player ever since he decided that he would come too the Timberwolves and run the sophisticated offence of Rick Adelman. “He is a great coach and we love having him, he works us really hard and pushes us too our limits, he wants the best for the team, and that’s what were looking for in a coach.” Says Timberwolves star power forward Kevin Love. Rubio’s numbers have been impressive all year when he scored his career high for points against the Philadelphia 76ers; he also recorded a remarkable assist number against the Sacramento Kings, and the Washington Wizards with 14 assists recorded in both games. He is an impressive athlete and people really do enjoy watching him. He is a very huge reason why people are attending, and buying tickets to there games. |
“I love watching him, my sons love going to games and watching Ricky, he is a remarkable athlete, and I can’t wait to watch him more in the upcoming years.” Comments from a Timberwolves fan.
But unfortunately Mr. Rubio, during their game against the Los Angeles Lakers, collided with Lakers star Kobe Bryant. He then later would get an MRI on his knee which indicated that he tore his ACL putting an end to his rookie season indefinitely. It was a terrible blow to all Minnesota fans around the world; he was a large reason for the Wolves success, which just last year finished with a record of 15-67. Hopefully the Wolves can continue their early success and contend for a western conference birth, but they will be asking for big help from low post star Kevin Love who is averaging 26.6 PPG this season, and 13.9 RPG. He is also leading the league in double doubles this year, and we all hope he can continue his success too the end of the season where it is most certainly needed. The wolves now stand in 11th place in the conference and would need to go on a run to catch up too the last play off spot held by the Houston Rockets who are in 8th place currently. They currently stand at a record of 25-27 and would need a tremendous win streak to push them into that last spot. |
Gophers win big and make frozen four
by Riley Miller
Staff Writer The Gophers are on top of the world after their 5-2 smack down that was laid down onto their cross-border rival in North Dakota The Gophers had 5 different goal-scorers in the route of UND; Marshall got the scoring started on a nice feed from Rau and Budish. The next goal went to Minnesota as well, Erik Haula put in a nice power-play goal; the assist goes to Bjugstad, and Hansen. Finally in the second the Sioux got on the board as |
Danny Kristo fired a rocket past Minnesota’s goalie Pattersen. Assist on the goal went to Nelson, and Panzerella. After eight hard-nosed hockey minutes the Gophers managed another goal as Matsen scored; assists were credited to Schmidt and Parenteau.
The Gophers started the scoring barrage again in the third after a small stalemate between the two rivals. Travis Boyd skated in all alone and fired a shot past North Dakota’s goalie Aaron Dell. Helpers on the goal went to Condon, and Matsen. Shortly after Minnesota made the game out of reach for the Sioux at a score of 5-1, as Condon gets on the board with assists to Boyd and Budish. North Dakota added another to their losing effort late in the third period, as Mario Lamouroux put in a rebound, assist given |
to Gleason.
After the game I met up with both head coaches and couple players from each team. I asked Lucia what a win like this meant to his team. “This is a big morale boost for us, we had just recently lost to them (North Dakota) and we wanted revenge, we most certainly got it today” When I spoke to junior goaltender Aaron Dell, I asked how he felt after a loss this late into the season meant to him. “We really wanted to win today and knock off the Gophers but the puck didn’t bounce our way, we didn’t get the breaks and they just plain out worked us in the third.” The Gophers will move on to play the Eagles of Boston College in the first game of the frozen four on April 7th, at 8:00 pm. |
DNR urges boaters to use caution
by Mitch Brutger
Sports Staff Writer With the ice receding from lakes and rivers at what seems like a near record pace, many boaters and anglers are already launching their boats. There were 400 or more fishing boats reported on the Mississippi River, March 17, on the 12-mile stretch between Lock and Dam Number 3 north of Red Wing to the head of Lake Pepin. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding boaters to take special precautions when enjoying early season boating and fishing. Even though air |
temperatures have been in the 70s recently, water temperatures are still bone-chilling cold.
"We see it time and time again in Minnesota boating accidents," said Tim Smalley, DNR boating safety specialist. "A lone boat on a lake capsizes; the victim isn't wearing a life jacket, has no warning or time to put one on, and drowns due to the effects of cold water." Smalley said the key is the life jacket. "A person who suffers swimming failure or loss of consciousness will stay afloat wearing a life jacket, but drown without one. It's smart for boaters to wear a life vest from the time they enter the boat until they return to shore. There is no time to put one on before a boating accident. It's been compared to trying to buckle your seat belt before a car crash." A 2007 report by the U.S. Coast Guard stated that a boating accident was five |
times more likely to be fatal if the water was colder than 60 degrees.
"Cold water can kill in ways that you might not expect," said Smalley. "Nearly everyone knows that immersion in cold water can cause hypothermia – the abnormal lowering of the body's core temperature. What most don't know is that victims who experience an unexpected fall overboard suffer initial cold water shock in the first minute, which involuntarily causes them to take a series of big breaths, called hyperventilation. If their head is underwater, they can inhale more than a quart of water and drown immediately if they aren't wearing a life jacket to keep them afloat." Unknown. (2012, May 05).
